Early tests for FHS soccer

Coming through a tough opening six-game stretch 4-0-2, Farragut soccer relied on a handful of seniors to help keep the Ads unbeaten in March.

Forward Jake Lowe stood out offensively during the Bearden Invitational Friday afternoon, March 26, at BHS’s Bill Young Field, scoring both of his goals in the second half to help FHS rally for a 2-2 tie versus Science Hill.

After surviving what first-year head coach Bradley Culbreth said was “an unorganized” first half where the Hilltoppers “made us work way harder than we should have,” Farragut recovered with Lowe’s goals, both assisted by freshman Brooks Burnette, in the 56th and 58th minutes.

“It was good to see if we were going to panic or if we were going to fight,” added Culbreth, whose team beat Cleveland, Hendersonville and Dobyns-Bennett by a combined 9-1 in the Varsity Gatlinburg Tournament March 19-21. “We strung together about 25 or 30 minutes where they were on their heels.”

About Lowe and fellow FHS senior forward Timi Omitaomu, “They can be a very big threat against anybody in the state,” the FHS coach said.

Also praised by SHHS head coach David Strickland, senior goalkeeper Max Kaplan “definitely kept us in that game,” Culbreth said. “... He has been quality this year, no question.”
