Spartans slip past West 2-1 in Bearden Invitational

KNOXVILLE — Weather played havoc with the 2021 Bearden Invitational, as Webb School of Knoxville had to answer an early wake-up call Sunday, March 28, to play its only Invitational game.

The Spartans kept their perfect record intact with a 2-1 victory against Knoxville West at BHS’s Bill Young Field.

Spencer Bernard converted a penalty kick in the 12th minute for the Spartans (2-0).

“It was a fun game. It was physical and a little chippy, and it was the kind of game you want to play early,” Webb head coach Jared Ziegler said. “I have three guys on my roster that used to play for West.

“Spencer and Zander Brown were ready to play. It was a great game and the teams were really coming at each other,” he added. “We outshot them 30-6 and we had double digit shots on frame.”

Webb took a 2-0 lead when Otto Niendorff tallied off an assist from Ben Pensky.

Spartans netminder Hassan Alizoti made two saves against West (3-1), whose goal came on a free kick from Evan Kilburn.
