KSYO Concerto Competition winner, Aponte, a Webb School senior violinist

Among all pre-college instrumental students who live in Knox, Anderson, Blount, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Loudon, Roane, Sevier or Union counties, Webb School of Knoxville violinist Colin Aponte was winner of the 2021-2022 Knoxville Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

One of three student-musicians selected for the live finals at the University of Tennessee earlier this month, Aponte received $500 and will perform the first movement of Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D Major as a soloist at KSYO’s Concerto Concert beginning at 7 p.m., Monday, Feb. 14, in Tennessee Theatre.

The event is open to the public.

A member of Webb’s Upper School string orchestra program, Aponte auditioned for and was named concertmaster of KSYO for the 2021-2022 season.

Candidates were required to submit their audio recordings to judges for the preliminary round of the competition, which also was open to current members of KSYO Association.

Eager to share his passion for music and its power to bring people together, Aponte started an international goodwill chamber music channel on YouTube and Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), titled “Bridge of Strings,” with students from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing.

“Its goal is to transcend boundaries between the United States and China and bridge the cultural, ethnic and political divide through classical music,” a Webb School press release stated.

Aponte, a senior, also lends his time and talents volunteering at the Joy of Music School in Knoxville.
