North Knox power duo handled by FHS softball

A strong showing against a pair of North Knox County Class 3A softball powers, to close the regular season, gives two-time defending state champion Farragut momentum heading toward the Class 4A post-season.

A 3-1 victory against Halls (23-3 starting this week) Saturday evening, April 29, was the final of just two Region II Challenge games FHS played (due to rainouts).

“We’re playing better, and that’s obviously what you’re looking for coming into the postseason here,” said Lady Admirals skipper Nick Green, whose team (25-4 overall) avenged a 3-0 loss to Halls earlier this season.

Winning pitcher Emma MacTavish went the full five innings (a time-limited Region II tourney game), allowing just one earned run, no walks and six hits with two strikeouts.

“She had a good performance,” Green said. “... We wanted to give her a good start going into the postseason.”

Two singles by Sophia Leto, an RBI double from Anna French, a sacrifice fly/RBI and single from Addison Pressley and an RBI single by Hailey Nichols were the clutch hits. Ava Guzowski also singled and scored — and drew a pair of walks — while Rilee Kate Ragan and Elsa Morrison also singled.

“It was a great game and they’re a great team,” Halls head coach Bryan Gordon said. “They got a few more timely hits than we did.”

Pitching depth, offense at Gibbs

With the emergence of senior transfer pitchers Leto and Avery Mattina in key roles, “We wouldn’t have been able to do this year what we’ve done with -out those two,” Green said.

Farragut cranked up the offense to close the regular season at Class 5A state power Gibbs Monday, May 1.

The District 4-4A league champ Lady Admirals (9-1 in district) hammered the Lady Eagles 11-1 as Morrison homered with three hits and two RBI, while Ragan (triple) and Laney Shrader (two doubles) each added two hits and two RBI. Audrey Ginel’s three-RBI double highlighted an eight-run second inning. Amelia Dorset also had two hits.

Winning pitcher MacTavish (five inning game, going the distance) allowed one earned run, six hits and three walks with two strikeouts.
