Triple distance champ is HVA’s Archdale

JOHNSON CITY — Winning the program’s first Section 1 Track & Field meet since 2002, the Farragut boys had eight individual-event state qualifier performances at Science Hill High School Saturday, May 13 — including first-place finishes in discus (Tyson Jackson), shot put (Bryce Thompson), 3200-meter run (Matteo Tonnos) and 800 run (Michael Mendonca).

Along with its 4 X 800 and 4 X 200 relay teams, Farragut earned the right to compete in 10 events at the TSSAA Division I Large State Meet later this month in Murfreesboro.

Jackson, a senior, tossed the discus 156-feet-01.00, while Thompson, a sophomore, fired the shot put 56-feet-04.50. In winning the 3200, Tonnos, a junior, did so at 9:17.32, with junior teammate Braden Ebbert, second and senior Admiral Trevor Coggin third. Mendonca, a senior, came in at 1:56.26 in the 800.

Coggin also was runner-up in the 1600 run, while Thompson took third in discus and Julian Gorfido, a junior, was third in pole vault.

While the 4 X 800 Ads relay took second, the 4 X 200 relay foursome finished fourth.

Meanwhile, the FHS Lady Admirals’ four state qualifying events were led by senior Samantha Harvey’s pole vault sectional championship effort (10-feet-03.00). Junior Parker Willis earned second in the 800, as did senior Emma Miller in the triple jump. The girls 4 X 800 relay finished fourth.

Other girls state qualifiers

From Hardin Valley Academy, junior Maddie Archdale won the 800 (2:17.34), 1600 (5:03.77) and 3200 (11:32.02); junior Gracie Waite placed second in discus; sophomore StuartAnn Leath finished fourth in the 3200; HVA’s 4 X 100 and 4 X 200 relay foursomes placed fourth, while its 4 X 800 captured third; and junior Harper Allen took fourth in pole vault.

From Bearden, senior Laila Rudolph placed second in 100 dash, junior Lydia Lively took second in 300 hurdles and BHS was third in 4 X 100 relay.

Other boys state qualifiers

From Hardin Valley Academy, senior Aiden Shaw was third in both the 400 and 200 dash, junior Carson Long placed third in the 800, sophomore McKale Hayes captured third in the 300 hurdles and the Hawks’ 4 X 400 relay team finished third.

From Bearden, senior Cayden Douglas finished second in high jump, sophomore Cade Crum finished third in the 1600 run and sophomore Gavin Bailey took fourth in pole vault.
