Lady Irish take Warriors

Knoxville Catholic High School won a home girls soccer match versus Christian Academy of Knoxville, 5-1, on Sept. 11.

Emery Hawes, Sophie Pumariaga, MJ Brooks, Gabby Mendez and Eden Perkinson scored goals for the Lady Irish. Hawes, Maria Notarianni (2) and Sophia Timmerman-Pelensky were credited with assists.

Goalkeeper Sophia Hennen also recorded a win in her first start for Catholic.

Seven games remain for Catholic in the regular season. Head coach Josh Martin discussed his team following a win over CAK and at the halfway point of the season.

“I fell pretty good about us,” Martin said. “We have probably played one of the toughest schedules in the state of Tennessee. We have five of the top 10 on our schedule, I think three of the top 10 in the nation on our schedule, so we’ve had some tough games and have tough games ahead. I have loved how the girls have reacted.

Martin highlighted strengths and leaders for Catholic this season.

“I think our backline and goalkeeping can play with just about anybody,” he said. “Goalkeeper Kate Hopkins, one of our more steady players, and Gianna Notarianni, a central midfielder, signed with Xavier to play, are some of our leaders.”

Catholic has matches against Girls Prep, Farragut, Powell, Briarcrest Christian, Webb, Maryville and Hardin Valley Academy remaining in the regular season. The Lady Irish have recorded wins over Oak Ridge, Heritage, Lakeway Christian Academy, Chattanooga Christian and CAK while tying Alcoa.

Catholic has outscored its opponents, 21-15, through eight contests.

The Lady Irish’s next home game is scheduled for Sept. 25 versus Powell after two road matches at Girls Prep and Farragut.
