Relaxation vital as students head back to school
For a moment, the imminence of freshman year was off her mind, as Lunn enjoyed the solitude and sanctity that arrived with an afternoon at the pool.
That is one of the many ways she chooses to relax — an aspect that, for her, is even more vital considering her previous health struggles.
But time away from the classroom is just as essential for any child who will be stepping back into the rigors of school and studies for the 2026-27 calendar.
“Relaxation supports good mental health, which is essential to your child’s learning,” according to Playworld.com. “When children relax, they’re able to think clearly with a positive attitude. It gives them time and space to reflect on their emotions, which promotes better behavior.
Stress is inevitable, even for children. However, too much stress can have a negative impact on their health, social interactions and performance in school. By giving kids time to relax, you can ensure that it doesn’t become too overwhelming.”
Child development consultant Amy Yacoub, a licensed speech-language Pathologist, noted the effects of that overwhelmed feeling in a 2022 blog.
“Ongoing academic demands can lead students to become stressed,” she wrote, “and 66 percent of kids have reported feeling stressed about grades. And this type of stress has been shown to impact children’s academic performance and mental health, resulting in issues like depression and anxiety.
