Monster Tree Service puts down new roots
Jeff Helie and his wife, Cheryl, purchased the company Monday, Aug. 31, after Jeff worked for the previous owner, Don Elliott, since February. Then Elliott offered to sell the company to the Helies. Prior to that, Elliott owned the company since 2019.
Helie plans to move the company to 6245 Primus Road, between Callahan Drive and Merchant Drive off Interstate 75 North, in November to accommodate its growth.
“For a long time, I’ve wanted to be an entrepreneur and business owner,” Jeff Helie said. “I just needed the right fit.”
“The owner actually reached out to me … to come over, and you know, run my business and see how we can make it better,” he recalled. “I really wasn’t really looking for a job.”
Then Elliott offered the ownership. Helie discussed the purchase with Cheryl, and made the move on Sept. 1.
“I knew what this business was capable of, but it’s just more than tree service; it’s making properties safe and looking good,” he said.
He explained Monster Tree Service, a full-service company that does tree removals, pruning, trimming, stump grinding, land clearing and excavation.
With excavation, “basically, we take an air spade and we blow around the roots,” Helie explained. “When you see mulch real high [around a tree], we will blow that mulch around.
“We’ll give you a little surface and clip the roots’ leads underneath, so the roots won’t be gurgled and the tree will actually grow during the winter time,” he said, adding the excavation “actually prevents the tree from choking out.
“And, we also do plant healthcare, which makes the properties healthy as well,” Helie said. “That includes fertilization and insect and disease control.
“We offer 24-hour emergency service,” he added. “And, we’re actually going into firewood sales, probably in November,” in which he sells logs from the trees he cuts. He also helps people with limited income obtain firewood.
With the heat, watering and fertilization are necessary for healthy plants.
Monster Tree Service has been at the 209 Hayfield Road location since it was established seven years ago, but it is outgrowing its space.
Monster Tree Service, which is backed by 525-plus five-star Google ratings reviews, currently has eight technicians, an operations manager, two International Society of Arborists-certified arborists and a general manager on staff.
