Finding the root of better health

Melissa Osborne, owner/board-certified nurse practitioner, is getting to the root cause of people’s health issues in her business, Rocky Top Vitality.

Located in Saah Salon, 102 S. Campbell Station Road, Suite 21, Osborne offers IV therapy — hydro-hydration, high-dose vitamin infusions and injections; red light therapy; and she just started offering functional medicine, as well as thyroid and hormone optimization.

She explained functional medicine gets to the root cause of diseases. Osborne also works with gut health and heavy metal and mold toxicity testing and treatment.

She is the only supplier in the state who carries a particular pharmacy brand of vitamins.

“So, everything is very high dose,” said Osborne, who has more than 20 years experience as a nurse practitioner. “For instance, if you’re needing an immunity infusion, my drip has 15,000 milligrams of vitamin C versus the standard infusion only has 6,500 milligrams.

“Everything I do is premium potency,” she said.

Osborne graduated from Georgetown University with a master’s degree and has oversight from a board-certified emergency medicine physician with more than 40 years of experience.

“And also my clients, when they come in here, they get a private room and one-on-one experience,” she said.

“A lot of IV clinics will put six or seven people in a room and there’s no privacy. Those places are not HIPA compliant necessarily.

“When my patients come in the door, they’re my focus,” Osborne said. “And if they want to have a friend come with them, I can accommodate them. It’s really up to the patient, but I want them to have my one-on-one attention.”

For the IV infusion, she doesn’t charge a consultation fee.

“They just pay for the price of the infusion,” Osborne said.

Having worked in corporate medicine for a long time, she decided, “I didn’t want my patients to be a number; I wanted to really establish a relationship with them and to really get to the root cause of illness.”

That realization stemmed from her health experience.

“Five years ago, I was diagnosed with an auto-immune disease,” Osborne shared. “[Doctors] couldn’t figure out what was going on. I got bounced from Mayo Clinic to different doctors, still don’t know what’s going on.

“I said, ‘You know what, there’s got to be more than just prescribing medication. We need to really focus on what is causing a patient’s systems rather than treating symptoms alone,’” she recalled.

“That was the driving force for this and God’s been really good,” Osborne said, adding she opened last December.

“Business is going really, really well,” she added. “I’ve got a lot of repeat clients, and it’s truly become my passion to focus on preventative health.”

About functional health, Osborne said, “A lot of times people go to the doctor after they’ve have a chronic illness for a long time, and it’s a lot more difficult to treat once it’s in advanced stages.

“And, functional medicine, as soon as you start having symptoms, we will take a look at the big picture,” she said. “We will go back, like childbirth to adulthood, is there anything that could be contributing these symptoms.

“A lot of times, adverse childhood events, trauma, could cause autoimmune disease in people as they get older,” Osborne said. “It’s really just important for patients to understand what’s going on with their bodies, and if they have symptoms for a long time, don’t wait until it becomes a chronic problem. Let’s nip it in the bud before it gets to that point.”

While she does not take insurance, she does accept flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts, which are accounts in which one designates pre-tax money to be taken from a patient’s pay.

Her hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Wednesdays and Fridays; from 4 to 8 p.m., Fridays; and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturdays. She is closed Sundays.

“I am flexible, though, so if somebody needs an appointment or I need to go mobile for IV therapy for somebody or they need a functional medicine appointment after hours, they can always reach out to me on a case-by-case basis,” Osborne said.
